The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) released the “2021 Global Innovation Index” on September 20th.

The index shows that China’s global ranking in the field of innovation has risen to the 12th place this year. China continues to remain as the only middle-income economy among the top 30 on the list.

According to the report, China has begun to rise steadily in the rankings since 2013, establishing its position as a global innovation leader and continues to come nearer to the top ten every year. This highlights the continuing importance of government policies and incentives in promoting innovation.

According to the World Intellectual Property Organization, the number of patents per GDP in China is higher than in Japan, Germany, and the United States. The number of patents, trademarks, and industrial designs per unit of GDP is even more impressive.

However, China is still behind Germany and the United States in indicators such as researchers and higher education enrollment rates.

Judging from the geographical distribution of innovation clusters, this year’s global top ten has only minor changes compared to last year.

Shenzhen-Hong Kong-Guangzhou and Beijing rank second and third in the world’s top 100 innovation clusters, second only to Japan’s Tokyo-Yokohama cluster, while Shanghai ranked eighth.

Among the top 100 clusters, China has 19, second only to the 24 clusters in the United States, but China’s clusters have the most significant growth in technological output.

The World Intellectual Property Organization Global Innovation Index is released annually, ranking the innovation ecosystems of 132 economies. In the past few years, Switzerland, Sweden, the United States, and the United Kingdom continue to lead the group, ranking first to fourth place respectively. This year South Korea, the Netherlands, Finland, Singapore, Denmark, and Germany are also in the top ten.
