This week, Strategy Analytics Wireless Smartphone Strategy Service (WSS) pointed out that the global wholesale price of smartphones will increase from $279 USD in 2020 to $310 USD in 2021, a year-on-year increase of 11%. This is the highest price in the smartphone industry since 2013.

Strategy Analytics analyst Abhilash Kumar said: “We expect global smartphone wholesale prices to increase by 11% year-on-year to $310 in 2021 from $279 in 2020. In 2021, global smartphone wholesale revenue is expected to increase by 21% year-on-year. Reaching a record high of $435 billion USD. This was mainly driven by the rebound in smartphone sales (a 9% year-on-year increase) and a higher average price. This is the first time in 9 years that the global average wholesale price has exceeded the $300 USD mark. The price increase is driven by the following factors: technology migration to 5G smartphones, supply constraints caused by component shortages (resulting in price increases), and new hardware innovations such as foldable/flip type introduced by Samsung.”

Qian Sui, Senior Director of Strategy Analytics, added: “Smartphones priced at $600+ USD have stimulated market growth. This is due to the steady sales of the iPhone 12 series, Samsung’s rich foldable mobile phone product line, and the Sales of other high-end devices from Chinese manufacturers, such as the OnePlus 9 series, Xiaomi 11 series, OPPO Reno series, Vivo X series, and so on. We expect that the newly released iPhone 13 series will fall into the above factors in Q4’21. We estimate that $600+ USD mobile phone sales will increase by 34% year-on-year, and revenue will increase by 48% year-on-year, significantly better than the overall market and other price ranges.”

Kumar added: “We expect global wholesale smartphone prices to fall back to $300 USD in 2022. Supply constraints and the easing of component price surges, and the iPhone SE model update coming in the first half of 2022, will drive prices down. We expect global wholesale smartphone prices to return to an upward track from 2023 to 2025.”
